Our commitment to continued improvement led to the development of our ‘re-classification process’. This top-down approach to wine making has been challenging but rewarding and the show success and accolades we’ve received – across the brands – are a direct result of it.
The Goal: To make World class wine.
At 170 acres, Moppity has a magical mix of unique blocks, planted to various clones on undulating terrain with a variety of aspects, elevations and soil types.
Originally, we applied high end viticulture techniques to just a few blocks that were destined for our Estate and Reserve labels. The high yield fruit from the other blocks was sold on to other companies.
The Solution: a re-classification process.
In 2008, we made the decision to improve our Reserve and Estate wines by giving ourselves more parcels of high quality fruit to choose from (more parcels = more complexity). This meant applying the same expensive viticulture practices and low yield targets to the entire vineyard. Then monitor, assess and allocate parcels to each grade.
“Now, in the right season, any of the thirty blocks can produce Reserve grade wine.” JB
What isn’t used for the Reserve wines (small batch production) is reclassified to the tiers below – regardless of quality. In a sense, there’s now a bit of Reserve in all of our wines.
The Outcome: considerably better wines across the portfolio.
Having multiple labels has enabled us to make much better Reserve wines. Consequently, being a by-product of the re-classification process means that our Estate and Lock & Key wines over-deliver in quality and value. The reviews and accolades speak for themselves.
