Moppity Vineyards triumphs at the Canberra and Region Wine Show
Moppity Vineyards has been crowned “Most Successful Exhibitor” for the eighth time in ten years (a record for the show), collecting a total of five trophies, 6 gold medals and 16 other awards. The awards were collected by Moppity’s owners, Jason and Alecia Brown.
In the blue-ribbon class of the show, Moppity’s “entry level” Lock & Key 2022 Shiraz was awarded top gold medal and three trophies for Best Shiraz Of Show, Best Hilltops Red Wine and Hilltops Wine of the Year. The Lock & Key Shiraz has previously won two gold medals, including at the recent NSW Wine Awards.
Gold medals were also awarded to the newly released Moppity Atrius 2022 Shiraz and the Moppity Atrius 2023 Albarino – bringing their tallies to three gold medals each. The Arius name refers to the Southern constellation, named for its three brightest stars and showcases wines from Moppity’s vineyards in Hilltops, Tumbarumba and Canberra – the three brightest stars of Southern NSW winemaking.
However, the highlight of the night for the Browns was winning the “Wine Of Provenance” trophy. Judges assessed three vintages of a single wine spanning at least 10 years. Moppity entered their Reserve Shiraz from 2022, 2015 and 2009. Mr Brown explained the significance of the award. “We’ve had a long-held belief that our Hilltops vineyard is capable of producing truly world class Shiraz that is not only enjoyable in its youth but increasingly captivating as it ages. We also aim to reflect the site in our wines so that our unique place is clearly recognisable, regardless of vintage. In some ways this is the most important class of the show as it awards consistency of both stye and quality. We only make the Reserve Shiraz in good vintages but the three vintages we entered were particularly special. The ‘22 is perhaps the best yet.”
The 2022 and 2023 vintages delivered a number of challenges, as a result of unusually cool wet weather. The results demonstrate Moppity’s ability to consistently produce outstanding wines even in the most difficult of seasons.
